Per-exercise sequence for coaching a client through one exercise, from setup to close-out. Built to evidence the assessment behaviours listed in L2 Programme Card — Draft (LAP page 34): screening/health and safety, clear demonstration and teaching points, observation and correction, intensity monitoring, two-way feedback, sensible timing, end-of-session feedback and signposting, leaving equipment in good order.
1. Setup
- Walk to the equipment
- Safety check: pins/collars secure, seat locked, space around the equipment clear
- Check/set the weight or resistance before demonstrating
- Quick pain/injury check for this specific movement ("any issues with this one?")
2. Explain and demonstrate
- Name the muscles worked, foot-to-head order (reduces the chance of missing one)
- Demonstrate the exercise
- Give teaching points in one pass: posture, grip/hold points, breathing, machine adjustments — avoid repeating posture separately in the next step
3. Coach into position
- Adjust the machine to fit them
- How to get into starting position
- Check understanding before starting: "make sense? any questions?"
4. Working set
- They perform the exercise; count reps and correct posture live, in real time — don't just observe and save it for afterward
- Give encouragement and feedback throughout
- Confirm clearly when the set is done
5. Debrief
- Well done
- Ask how it felt
- Get an effort score (RPE-style, out of 10): below 7–8 → suggest going up next set; at 7–8 → ask if they're happy staying there; above 8 → suggest easing back
- Rest 60–90 s before the next set (per programme card)
6. Repeat
2 more sets, checking in and adjusting between each, as in step 5.
7. Close out
- Re-rack weights / return machine to neutral
- Suggest alternatives if this equipment isn't available
- Give a way to make it harder and a way to make it easier
Note: end-of-session feedback and signposting next steps are session-level behaviours, not per-exercise — handled in the overall session-flow structure in the programme card draft, not duplicated here.
