All EC2 instances managed via the ansible repo. Naming scheme: fungi/seaweed. Names are never reused. earthstar is reserved for non-spot use only.
Updated automatically by ~/aws/update_hosts_note.py on provision/terminate/stop/start — BUT awslaunch.py (used for the delayrepay browser hosts) does NOT call it, so morel and enoki were missed and added here MANUALLY on terminate (2026-09-03). TODO: wire the updater into awslaunch.py / the browser_host playbook so ephemeral hosts self-register. See ansible/todo.
Do not record IP addresses in this note — not even current ones. An EC2 public IP changes on every stop/start, so an address written here is wrong within days, and being written down is exactly what gets it trusted. This is not hypothetical: until 2026-09-25 this note carried addresses for gravlax and kelp that were both long dead, and hosts/kelp had gone stale the same way — which cost a session's debugging. The EC2 instance ID is the stable identifier: record that, and nothing else that changes. An address quoted “just as an example” becomes a stale record too, so this note contains none.
To get a current address, resolve the name rather than looking it up here: <name>.critchley.biz in DNS (every host self-registers its own A record at boot via /etc/rcs/setdns), or /etc/hosts on pomelo (maintained by the sss.py daemon, which awsctl.py updates on every start/stop), or ask AWS directly: aws ec2 describe-instances --region <region> --instance-ids <id> --query 'Reservations[0].Instances[0].PublicIpAddress'. Note the region — the CLI default is us-east-1, which is never right for these hosts.

| shimeji | i-02e34f56c8e218f95 | eu-central-1 | ephemeral | terminated | delayrepay browser host (GWR Delay Repay) — provisioned and torn down 2026-10-21; stood up to the GWR login page for a season-ticket claim session, no claim submitted. |
2026-10-21 cleanup / known incompleteness: added shimeji above (per the add-on-terminate convention). Pruning eu-central-1 keypairs down to just kelp that day confirmed this table is not exhaustive for ephemeral browser hosts: several stood up since maitake were never recorded — e.g. porcini and chanterelle (2026-09-09 sessions, see ansible/todo), plus others whose only remaining trace was a now-deleted keypair (truffle, bolete, cep, oyster, puffball, inkcap, amanita). Their lifecycles aren't reliably reconstructable, so they are acknowledged here rather than back-filled as fabricated rows. The root cause — awslaunch.py not calling update_hosts_note.py so browser hosts never self-register — remains open in ansible/todo.
See ansible for playbook reference.
Non-EC2 hosts are documented separately and are not in the table above: hosts/gravlax (EC2, but with its own detail note), hosts/radagast (FreeBSD guest on pomelo) and hosts/mac-mini (the 2009 Mac mini, whose data migration to the NAS completed 2026-09-17; its address is in that note).
