When there is disruption between Paddington and Reading (overhead power, signalling, etc.) the normal route home via Elizabeth Line → Paddington → GWR is a bad choice. The same incident typically affects both GWR and the Elizabeth Line simultaneously, as demonstrated 2026-07-09.
Walk 7 min to Elizabeth Line at Canary Wharf → direct to Paddington (~20 min) → GWR westbound
Jubilee Line entrance is just outside work — no walk needed.
Jubilee (Canary Wharf → Waterloo, ~16 min, 5 stops) → South Western Railway (Waterloo → Reading via Ascot/Wokingham, ~65 min) → board GWR westbound at Reading
SWR runs on 750V DC third rail — completely unaffected by GWR 25kV overhead line problems. Joining the GWR train at Reading instead of Paddington means:
- Avoiding the disrupted section entirely
- Boarding at Reading where the train is less crowded (standing room only from Paddington during delays)
- ~30-35 min buffer at Reading before the delayed GWR train arrives
Check GWR and TfL status BEFORE LEAVING THE BUILDING — not at the station.
If either shows disruption between Paddington and Reading:
→ Do not walk to the Elizabeth Line
→ Step outside and take the Jubilee instead
Finding out at the Elizabeth Line entrance means a 14-minute round trip back to the Jubilee, losing the time advantage. Finding out at Paddington is worse — you are already committed to a long wait.
Left work ~17:30 BST. Elizabeth Line + GWR delay meant standing at Paddington 41 minutes, standing on train Paddington→Reading.
Contingency timing (estimated):
17:32 Jubilee from Canary Wharf
17:48 Waterloo
17:52 SWR departs
18:57 Reading (approx)
19:28 Delayed GWR arrives Reading
Buffer: ~31 minutes — very comfortable, guaranteed seat from Reading
